How to get cited in ChatGPT answers

Person asking an AI assistant a question on a laptop

More people now ask ChatGPT or Gemini where to buy, who to hire or which tool to use, instead of searching Google. When the assistant answers, it often names a few brands and links to a few sources. If you are not one of them, you are invisible in that conversation.

There is no switch that gets you cited, and no one outside OpenAI or Google knows exactly how the models pick sources. But how these assistants search the web is understood well enough to act on. Here is what helps, and how to measure whether it is working.

How AI assistants pick their sources

When ChatGPT or Gemini answers a question about something current, such as products, local businesses or prices, it usually searches the web first. It then reads a handful of pages and writes an answer from them, often citing the pages it used.

So getting cited comes down to two things:

  1. Being one of the pages the assistant finds when it searches.
  2. Being the page that answers the question most clearly once it reads.

Brand mentions work a little differently. An assistant may name your brand because it read about you on other sites, like reviews, lists and directories, even if it never cites your own website.

Six ways to improve your chances

1. Answer the question in plain words, early

Assistants pull out passages that answer the question directly. A page that opens with a clear answer, then explains, is easier to use than one that buries the answer under a long introduction. Use the words your customers use, include definitions, prices, comparisons and steps, and put the key facts in text, not only in images.

2. Rank in normal search

The assistant’s web search still needs to find you. Pages that rank well in Google and Bing are far more likely to be read and cited. Classic SEO is not replaced; it is the entry ticket.

3. Be present where your market is discussed

Best-of lists, review sites, directories, industry media and forums are often what an assistant reads when someone asks “which is best”. If your brand is missing from those pages, a competitor that appears on them gets mentioned instead. Getting listed, reviewed and written about on trusted sites in your market is now an AI visibility task, not just PR.

4. Keep your brand facts consistent

Your name, what you do, where you operate and who you serve should read the same on your site, your Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Inconsistent facts make it harder for an assistant to connect “your brand” to “the answer”.

5. Make your pages easy to fetch

Check that your robots.txt doesn’t block the crawlers AI search tools use, such as OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot, and that important content isn’t hidden behind scripts, logins or pop-ups. If the assistant can’t load the page, it can’t cite it.

6. Write for the language of the question

An Arabic question is answered mostly from Arabic sources. If your customers ask in Arabic, you need strong Arabic pages, not just an English site, and the same goes for being mentioned on Arabic review and news sites.

How to measure it

AI answers change from one run to the next, so one test in your own ChatGPT account tells you very little. Your account also carries your history and preferences. To measure fairly:

  • Write the questions your customers actually ask. “Best running shoe store in Dubai”, not “Example Store reviews”.
  • Ask as a logged-out guest, so the answer isn’t shaped by your own history.
  • Ask several times and look at rates, not single answers: how often you are mentioned, and how often your site is cited.
  • Record the sources. The sites the assistant cites most in your market tell you where to get listed or covered.
  • Track competitors in the same answers, so you know who you are losing mentions to.
  • Repeat over time, because models and their sources change.

How SERP Tracker does it

SERP Tracker’s AI visibility tracking asks ChatGPT and Gemini your prompts as a logged-out guest, several times per check. It records whether each answer names your brand, whether it cites your site, every source each answer used in order, and which competitors appear. It also detects Google AI Overviews in your rank checks and whether they mention or link to you.
